Captain Timothy Johnson

Captain Timothy B. Johnson is a law enforcement professional with more than 22 years of public safety experience and a strong commitment to the Tappahannock community. Appointed Captain in 2025, he serves as the department’s second-in-command and oversees administrative, investigative, and operational functions.
Captain Johnson has served the Tappahannock Police Department in numerous capacities, including Detective, Interim Sergeant, Interim Captain, and Interim Chief of Police. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated strong leadership, problem-solving, and operational expertise while helping guide the department through organizational growth and change.
As a Detective, Captain Johnson developed extensive investigative experience and worked closely with federal, state, and local agencies, including the FBI, DEA, Virginia State Police, Virginia Marine Police, Conservation Police, and U.S. Secret Service. He also served on a Virginia State Police task force focused on reducing illicit drug activity in the Tappahannock community and has conducted complex investigations, surveillance, and undercover operations.
As Captain, Johnson plays a key role in developing crime-reduction strategies, managing staffing and training, overseeing employee development and performance, coordinating fleet operations, and supporting the department’s Police Chaplains. He maintains a strong connection with the department’s officers and is committed to providing them with opportunities to grow professionally and succeed.
Captain Johnson holds an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of Phoenix and has completed extensive law enforcement and leadership training. He is an active member of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police.
In 2025, Captain Johnson completed the FBI-LEEDA three-part Leadership Institute, earning the prestigious Trilogy Award after completing Supervisory, Command, and Executive Leadership programs. This achievement reflects his continued commitment to professional development and effective leadership.
Captain Johnson is dedicated to serving the community, developing the next generation of law enforcement professionals, and helping build a stronger, more accountable, and forward-thinking police department.
